FLYING MADLY OFF IN ALL DIRECTIONS

I am not writing a blog this month because:

*The garden has called:

Twenty years ago, when we bought this bungalow, there was a tidy front garden, a row of shrubs, a small, raised bed with two trees and the rest was grass. I dug up the grass and planted every inch of ground with shrubs and flowers including bamboo.

-High maintenance. Oh, how I wish I had left it alone.

Grant dug out the grass in the back yard and replaced it with terracotta pavers.

-Low maintenance. Sensible.

I planted every other empty patch with Rhododendrons, ground cover, flowering shrubs, and we put in a fishpond.

-High maintenance, not sensible.

I am not writing a blog this month because:

*Swimsuit season is coming up and I am working on getting toned.

Ha, ha, ha!!! As if!

*I am working on fitness, so I can work in the garden. I am doing stretches, promising myself that I will walk daily, meanwhile my hands are stiff with arthritis and it’s hard to type let along work in the garden.

I am not writing a blog this month because:

*I am pushing through with the editing of my up coming book, now tentatively called Coastal Adventures: And the Dog Came Too.

I am not writing a blog this month because:

*The blog I was writing this month just wouldn’t gel.

* It’s tax season!

* AND I AM FLYING MADLY OFF IN ALL DIRECTIONS!

I will come back to earth next month. Maybe read a bit of Stephen Leacock in between. Get the reference?

Meanwhile, lets enjoy this sweet time of year, spring with all her promises.

If you enjoyed this and are curious about more content from an Island Crone, please subscribe from my web page/blog sidebar. I promise to post at least once a month and sometimes more. But not often enough to bore.

    • thanks Bunny, i know you can relate to the garden and all those other pressures…aren’t we lucky that we have so much going on and will never be bored!!!

  1. Chuckling out loud!
Miss Crofton but settling in well in White Lake. It’s nearly painted turtle time – a conservation reminder to slow down and watch for turtles on the road.
Thank you for the reminder to keep low maintenance in mind while building our new yard and garden! So far, the garden shed is up.

    • Hi Lyn!
lucky you having painted turtles…where I used to live on Riverbottom Rd we had the toad hatch and had to drive cautiously…enjoy your new garden, looking forward to photos..cheers Liz

  2. More food for thought. Your blog got me thinking about what excuses I could come up with for not writing. I’ve decided I need a garden – just enough to say I have one, nothing too time consuming. Maybe some lettuce and a couple petunias. Then when I spend all morning doing word puzzles or half the afternoon playing solitaire and get caught short on word count I can roll my eyes, sigh, and exclaim “oh that garden!” Not only will all will be forgiven, but I’ll be admired for my dedication and hard work. Perfect. 🤗🌷

    • Well Sylvia, my friend, if you want to pull off the ‘garden’ excuse you better have grime filled nails…I know you like to get your nails done…and gardening and nice nails do not work…I will be checking your finger nails…LOL

  3. oh dear!..I long to invent a front garden just like yours…I “work” on it during the scattered times when.. we are actually home and not gadding about housesitting other people’s plants pets & places..when…random people give me random plants or shrubs…or TREES!..and I just plant them willy nilly..when..my live-in gardener, Mother Nature, does a dam fine job of planting native selection…ie weeds (I like flowering weeds)..please! don’t suggest I don’t do it..be like you, I mean

    • ha ha Sharon, I hear your pain…love your reply. if you do nothing you will end up with a garden like mine…my next door neighbour nips over and mows my sliver of grass when it gets long…and somehow it all works out…love liz

  4. Love this non-blog! BTW I love what you have done with your front garden. It is so creative – just like you! Your writing has reminded me that I am trying to make life easier for myself and am putting in more shrubs in my perennial beds. The idea is that as I age gardening will be easier. I might even put bark mulch between the shrubs but then that would cover up all the volunteers that I like such as feverfew, the hundreds of blue bells which pop up each spring, calendula, etc. So now I still have to contend with all the buttercup weeds which reliably show up every March Sigh!

    • ah but buttercups are so pretty!!! Katie your garden rivals Butchart Gardens, it would be a shame to change anything. I garden with my bare hands so I would hate bark mulch, slivers…i have many old fashioned perennials that seem to choke out most weeds, thanks for replying!

  5. I love this “no blog this month” blog. I miss writing, and keep thinking I should see if there’s a writers group near me, but then I’d feel obligated to write and, well, what’s my excuse? And I can’t even use the gardening excuse as two pots on my patio don’t take much time. Of course, that’s one advantage of renting a private suite in a lovely neighborhood….I get to enjoy everyone’s gardens without doing any of the work! But I really should find something to occupy my time besides scrolling through the phone, playing digital games, doing crosswords, reading, occasionally painting a few cards or taking a few photos, or going for a walk. We’ll…there you are….that’s why I don’t have time to write!

    • and you write so well Jean, have you checked at the library for a writers group, or explored writing for a local literary magazine…there must be some…I want to explore writing for magazines…we could start one if we lived closer…yikes what am i saying…I’m flying off in too many directions now as it is…the thing is, we can’t just sit!!!!
      love Liz

  6. Dear Liz, Spring ! It’s Wood Element time in the Chinese Five Element view of things, so flying madly off in all directions is very Wood energy… just look at any willow… New sprouts in all directions.
You’re in the right place right on time. You are planning and envisioning, also part of the Wood season.
When we recognize this crazy growth time for what it is ; we can be a little easier on ourselves.
It’s easy to feel frustrated at what we can’t accomplish… our wood is pruned, limited by circumstances… GRRRRR!
Carry on, the cycles continue, and we have our place in them.💚💚💚

    • ah, Cheri wise woman,
thank you for that, wood energy. How about a monthly five element newsletter from you…in your spare time of course. It would be well received….love Liz
